This paper argues that Westphalian sovereignty was crucial in placing Africa on the periphery of the world order and focuses on Africa's resistance to that marginalisation.
Dr Kwame Nimako teaches international relations at the Graduate School of Social Sciences, University of Amsterdam. He is the author or co-author of some 30 books, reports and guide books on economic development, ethnic relations, social policy, urban renewal and migration. His latest book is The Dutch Atlantic: slavery, abolition and emancipation (with Glenn Willemsen, Pluto Press, 2011).
